The Democratic Convention last week in Denver, Colorado was filled with political, human, and celebrity appeal. There was a serious energy and synergy that filled both halls and provided the downtrodden with promise, the war-torn with the prospect of peace, and those who have fallen between the cracks of our government with hope that we will see change, renewed prosperity, fiscal and economic responsibility, and diplomacy executed by our elected officials on the horizon should the Obama/Biden ticket be successful in November.
Conversely, the republican convention has reminded me more of a funeral than a celebration. Noticeably missing have been smiles, anyone accepting responsibility for bad actions taken by their administration, especially in regard to unilateral pre-emptiveness based wholly on lies, fabrications, and deception, or descriptions for how they may improve upon that past debacle. What I also found quite unusual was speeches delivered by the remainder of those who ran against McCain during the primary season, i.e. Romney, Huckabee, and Giuliani. Of those three, only Huckabee smiled and offered a message with a glimmer of hope or shimmer of feeling for humanity. The remainder was merely attack dogs dissing the democratic candidates, but offering little of substance that dealt with the issues facing our nation and the world.
The big hoopla centered on McCains vice-presidential selection, Sarah Palin. Obviously the crowd and much of the media like Mrs. Palin, but scant little was known or is known about her past, present, or future. She delivered a solid message, if not quite factual, which I am sure turned a few back toward their failing party. She attacked the Obama/Biden ticket by stating that she has more experience than they do, which I seriously doubt she can prove. She outlined three things she accomplished as governor for Alaska as being; 1) selling the governors jet on e-bay, 2) firing the governors cook, and finally, 3) helping to see the new $40 million dollar natural gas pipeline to fruition. Now I ask you to consider this in all seriousness, do those accomplishments qualify her to be the second in command of this country we all love? Can the republican party groom her toward that end in the short three months before the election?
Sarah Palin has been out of this country only once in her entire life. She took a trip to Iraq last year to visit the troops. She has only been governor of Alaska, a remotely populated state, for one and a half years. She was previously mayor of a town with a population of approximately 6,500 and served on the PTA. Is that vice-presidential material or wishful thinking? I do not ask you, as voters, to lessen her service or accomplishments, regardless of how great or small, but as consideration necessary for the genuine qualifications required for this high post.
Please do not vote for her and McCain merely because she is a woman and he [McCain] needs the woman´s vote in order to succeed. Please vote for the candidate that is best qualified to handle this important job and the huge issues that require experience, intelligence, education, leadership and diplomatic skills, and knowledge of world affairs as well as the many, various, and sundry circumstances plaguing the people here at home. Take the time to know the issues and how the candidates plan to overcome the issues that are important to people like you and me, because we do matter. I believe that once you´ve had ample time to review those issues you will conclude that Obama/Biden is the best qualified team to lead this country in these troubled times!
