In the midst of the scandals and issues concerning Sarah Palin and her family and pregnant daughter, John McCain is quoted by the Wall Street Journal as saying:
"This is a very personal matter for the family. We should all respect the love they have for the child and the desire all parents would have for their children´s privacy." In fact, all Republicans sing to the same tune: Hands off!
Thanks to the Internet, facts and public records become accessible for mere mortals. Some digging into archives found this snippet from a John McCain speech during a Republican Dinner in June 1998 published in the June 25, 1998 version of Salon:
"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno." McCain attacked a teenaged Chelsea Clinton but cries foul about Sarah Palin's children being the subject of a debate.
Some may cry foul but one can make an argument that discussing a teen's pregnancy in the context of whether abstinence only policies work is a legitimate question and issue.
This is not the first time John McCain changed his tune. This election, however, is not about issues anymore but character. That´s not just my impression but also that of John McCain´s campaign manager Rick Davis. For once I agree with the Republicans, because the RNC was silent about issues. Deafeningly silent.
As if the economy, healthcare and war were no longer an issue. Nor unemployment or mortgage crisis. They are for some.
Character smearing should not be the issue. But what do you talk about when you have eight years of continued failures? Exactly.
