Last week, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin revealed that her 17-year-old, unmarried daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant. Does this mean that Palin, a strong social conservative, is a hypocrite? If course not. Only those who buy into the silly arguments of the loony left believe such tripe. However, mishandling the situation can make her a hypocrite.

Palin should in no way back off from her stances against abortion and other immoral behavior like adultery and pre-marital sex. Nor should she abandon her support for abstinence education or capitulate to those who wrongly assert that more sex education and wider access to birth control are the best ways to reduce teen pregnancies. She should also continue her advocacy of creationism being taught in the public schools as alternative to evolution. If elitists donīt like it, too bad. So far, she appears to be standing pat.

However, I am a little concerned by the fact that she seems to be handling her daughterīs pregnancy in too much of a nonchalant fashion, as if itīs no big deal. Iīm sure thatīs not the way she really feels, but someone could easily interpret her demeanor that way. And if pre-marital sex is no problem, then why oppose it? Does she expect girls of that age to be having sex anyway? See what Iīm getting at? Therefore, Palin should publicly condemn pre-marital sex and teen pregnancy in no uncertain terms to let people know beyond any doubt that she does not condone what her daughter did. As far as I know, she has not made such public statement.

In addition, she should rebuke those so-called conservative Republican women who say her situation makes her seem more "real" or endearing to them. That would put the kibosh on the possible misconception that she is reveling in it. In doing so, she would make it clear that there is absolutely nothing good about it, although she still loves her daughter and supports her decision to keep the baby and marry its father. Without this kind of strong denunciation, she could inadvertently be sending the wrong kind of message to teenage girls. Now that would make her a hypocrite.
