Corralling Clutter in Baskets and Boxes

Sandra Mckee
Everyone has been the victim of clutter at one time or another in their lives. The problem with clutter is that it detracts from the design of a room, so no matter how beautiful your furniture, wine home decor, tropical wall decorations or metal tree wall art might be, clutter detracts from the entire room and makes it look unkempt. In time, clutter will even compromise the functionality of a room. Luckily there are many different containers that you can use to help organize your home.

Trapping Clutter in a Basket

Especially if you have a traditional style home, baskets work really well for hiding clutter. If you use decorator baskets, you can keep items close by without having them look like clutter. For example, if you store your makeup and lotions in a basket on your bathroom countertop, especially if it has a lid, you can keep your counter looking neat and tidy, yet your makeup is close at hand. Not only does organizing with a basket make your bathroom look much neater, but when you go to clean the counter, you simply pick up the basket and wipe under it instead of picking up each item individually. Baskets are also a great way to organize towels in the bathroom. Organize your shower supplies with metal baskets that you can hang on the shower wall. In the kitchen, baskets are great for storing just about everything. For example, think about keeping silverware, kitchen gadgets and snack food in baskets on countertops, tables and mounted on the wall. The great thing about using baskets for storage is that they are so portable. You can use them to hold mail, the dog's leash and whatever else you need to keep handy.

Beautiful Boxes Contain the Chaos

By having some decorative boxes with lids in your house, you can conceal clutter very easily. You can find decorative boxes in all shapes and sizes, and you can find them to match any décor. Look for boxes in coordinating patterns and colors that you can display on your shelves. You can make your own decorative boxes by wrapping cardboard boxes with wallpaper or contact. Whether you choose to buy or make decorative boxes, make sure that they have lids so that all of your clutter is cleverly hidden.

Storing Stacks of Magazines

One of the biggest sources of clutter in the home is the never ending stack of magazines. Keeping them organized is paramount to keeping your home clutter free. You can find magazine holders that are designed to fit on a shelf; and if you want to make your own, you can use an old cereal box, cut it to the proper shape and cover it with contact paper. If you have an extensive collection of magazines, you can make, or buy, a series of magazine holders to keep your room free from magazine clutter.

Double Duty Furnishings

When you go furniture shopping, look for furniture that has built-in storage. Ottomans, coffee tables and storage benches are perfect storage solutions in just about any room in your home. Choose a bed with drawers beneath the platform or tables and desks with drawers and add storage without taking up any additional floor space. For example, a small writing desk in the foyer would be the perfect solution for storing incoming mail and car keys: This way, the incoming mail will not turn into a mountain of paper, and you will never again have to go searching for your keys.
