Rip Currents May Impact U.S. Seaboard.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - AccuWeather.com reports a tropical storm watch is in effect for Bermuda as category 1 Hurricane Bertha continues to track east of the island. Meanwhile, higher waves and rip currents courtesy of Bertha with impact the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.

As of 11:00 a.m. EDT, Hurricane Bertha was located near 28.5 north and 62.0 west, or about 310 miles south-southeast of Bermuda, moving northwestward at 6 mph. Maximum sustained winds remain at 85 mph with some higher gusts.

Although Bertha is expected to continue to track northwest and turn north of the next 12 to 24 hours, she will still impact Bermuda. Large swells, rough surf and high waves are starting to batter the island, and because Bertha will continue to slow down as it makes its northward turn, rough surf and high waves will continue through the weekend into early next week.

The center of Bertha should make its closest pass to Bermuda late Sunday when it is about 120 miles east of the island. Bertha will probably come close enough for some outer rainbands to reach the island, and there may be tropical storm-force wind gusts as well. A westward shift in the track of Bertha would mean that Bermuda would receive a larger impact from the storm, so the island and all those with interests on the island should to carefully monitor the storm´s progress the progress of the storm over the next few days.

Higher waves and rip currents are also possible along the East Coast of the United States over the weekend into next week. Beachgoers should be alert for the dangers and only swim in areas monitored by lifeguards.

Frequent updates on the storm's progress are available at the AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center.
